Wedding Flowers Made Simple: Over 80 Glorious Designs for That Special Day Review

Wedding Flowers Made Simple: Over 80 Glorious Designs for That Special Day

I got this book out of the library, along with "Bouquets: A Year of Flowers for the Bride" and the Knot book, and I would have to say, this was by far the least useful. For one thing, there was nothing simple about it-- the arrangements either involved mountains of flowers, or varieties of orchids I had never seen anywhere else, or arrangements that were closer to balancing acts. There is one picture that seemed to have literally hundreds of calla lillies around a doorway. Come on!
Compared to the Bouquets book, which offered a lot of variety and was pretty creative, this just seemed like a lot of lilies & orchids & roses, and compared to the Knot book, it wasn't as practical, cost effective, or even very descriptive. I am not a fan of the Knot website, but surprisingly, I found their flower book the most informative. I would recommend either book over this one.

Priceless Weddings for Under $5,000 Review

This is a wonderful book with real-life solutions for brides-to-be. As a party planner for over 15 years, I have had the occasion to help hundreds of brides plan their weddings and there is an abundance of usable ideas in this book. The average wedding in the U.S. is tens of thousands of dollars and that simply does not make sense. The bridal industry takes advantage of brides who want their day to be a once in a lifetime event - Kathleen Kennedy helps them do just that, but with budget conscious ideas. This is not a book about cutting corners. It is about making priorities and planning a wedding that truly reflects who the bridal couple is; that, as Kennedy explains, does not have to break the bank. I will recommend this book to every bride I know.

Simply Beautiful Weddings: 50 Projects to Personalize Your Wedding Review

Simply Beautiful Weddings: 50 Projects to Personalize Your Wedding

Save yourself the money and take this book out from the library. I only liked 2 or 3 of the ideas and to me that's not worth $15. About half of the book contains jewelry making instructions. I also wouldn't call it "projects to personalize your wedding" I would call it "projects on a budget." If you are looking for ways to save money by making standard wedding necessities on your own then I recommend this book to you. But if you are looking for unique ideas for personalizing your wedding this is not the book for you.

Colette's Wedding Cakes Review

Colette's Wedding Cakes

I always enjoy looking at any of Colette's books. While I personally find several of the designs a bit over the top for my, and most of my bride's, tastes, her creativity is astounding! There are quite a few nice, more toned-down designs as well. The directions are very clear and detailed, unlike some other "celebrity" cake decorators who want to sell books, yet not give away any of their "secrets". Her cakes are interesting to look at, and great for coming up with new ideas, perfect for someone who is looking for something different. I'm always amazed by her creations!

The Ultimate Book of Wedding Cakes Review

The Ultimate Book of Wedding Cakes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Attention to detail and perfection in execution are the trademarks of the cakes featured in The Ultimate Book of Wedding Cakes by Lesley Herbert. In this picture-filled book, Herbert features over 30 original wedding cake designs.
Herbert features a variety of wedding cakes in this book. The techniques that she features for decorators are rolled fondant (sugarpaste), royal icing, pattern transfer, piped embroidery, color flow collars (floodwork), and frills. While the majority of cakes are coated in marzipan and sugarpaste, she also includes a cake done in buttercream and a cake covered in a white chocolate ganache. The most valuable part of the book for me was the 14 pages of templates at the back of the book. The embroidery templates are simple, classic, and elegant.
The strengths of this book are in the detailed instructions Herbert provides on how to reproduce these cakes. From the templates to pictures of stages of construction, these instructions are clear and well-written. All of the metrics provided have been converted to inches for decorators outside of the UK. In the Acknowledgements section, Herbert provides a list of suppliers that were used in the creation of this book. Herbert also has included 4 pages on pillars and stands featured in the book.
While Herbert sets the expectations of anyone using this book, it is a good resource for advanced decorators. The step-by-step instructions and detailed photographs will make sense to experienced cake professionals and enthusiasts.

The DIY Bride: 40 Fun Projects for Your Ultimate One-of-a-Kind Wedding Review

The DIY Bride: 40 Fun Projects for Your Ultimate One-of-a-Kind Wedding

By the time we get married, my fiance and I will have been engaged for 3 years (longer than we've been dating)! We pushed the date back in order to save money to pay for this party. Had this book been available earlier, I would have gotten married sooner with all the money I would have saved! I've purchased other DIY wedding craft books, but this is by far the best! The projects are fun and hip unlike some other books that have projects that look like they are straight out of the 80's. Some of the best features of this book are (1) the resource guide in the back--it lists many different websites and stores where the materials can be purchased, (2) the money-saving clues for each project (it lists what the item would cost if you purchased it from a vendor as opposed to DIY--I love knowing that I'm saving money!), (3)skill level and time/manpower needed (it lists whether you can complete the project by yourself or if you should enlist the help of family members, maids, or fiance), (4) the step-by-step instructions with visual aides for those of us that need visual cues, and (5) the timeline in the front of the book lists when you should purchase materials needed by and what projects should be completed first. I definitely would recommend this book as I already plan to do several of the projects! GREAT BUY!

Home Guide to Cake Decorating Review

Home Guide to Cake Decorating
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I LOVE this book. I have tried a few things out of it already, and while I haven't got the hang of it quite, this is one of the best books i have come across for cake decorating and learnign it
There is a substantial section at the start which is all about cake decorating and how to do it - each chapter is a different aspect, such as run outs, flowers, lace work, piping, colouring etc.
In the back of the book are several recipes for cakes which have easy to follow instructions, but even better they have the size of cake tin and what amoutn of ingreidnets you need in a simple to use chart.
Now to teh designs - some of the best I have seen - some are just gorgeous - the truffle cake took a bit of work but it was well worth it for a friend of mine who was leaving and I wanted to do something really special and beautiful for her. The recipes also mention if you can make anything in advance, how and where to keep it etc so I was able to a lot before the event and assemble it reasonably quickly
I also made the girls castle cake - an absolute gem - my daughter ADORED it - she is really into Barbie as Rapunzel at the moment so those magical castles are her dream. There are a huge variety of ideas in here from fabulous tall jungle cakes, number cakes for kids, fabulous wedding cakes, traditional cakes, really lovely christmas cakes and so much more
It is a massive book at 428 pages, but is only just larger in proportions than a large format paperback. A lot heavier though as it is done on gloss stock
Sumptuously illustrated, my 3 year old daughter loves reading it - I am trying out the Humpty cake next. Each has its own challenges and while I am not a fan of piping and not very good at it, there is much more than piping here, and some great ideas for layer cakes too.
Each important stage is well illustrated in a clear colour photo and instructions - looks good and tastes good too!
Highly recommended for beginners or experts, something in here for everyone and every occassion

This compact, portable, user-friendly guide is the definitive reference book for all cake decorating enthusiasts. Cake decorating is a fabulous mixture of cookery and art, with a sprinkling of inspiration, precise care and reckless use of the imagination thrown in for good measure. This book will lead the novice through the simplest basics, but also contains great ideas and fantastic creations to inspire experienced sugarcrafters. If you have never baked before but want to make a teddy bear's picnic cake for your toddler's birthday, or if you are planning a three-tiered traditional cake with a cream frangipani for a family wedding, this is the book to show you how to do it.
