I bought this cake stand as a housewarming gift. It was even prettier in person and made a lovely gift. My friend loved it and keeps it out all the time.

Made with Armetale metal, the product will not rust, tarnish, crack, chip, or dent.Armetale serveware is food safe and can be used serving cake or hot and cold tapas. This design is a reproduction and adaptation of an 1821 candlestick base designed by Mr Karl Friedrich Schinkel of the Prussian Empire. The design incorporates Greek, Gothic and Roman influencesinto a grand style that is intended to dazzle with boldness and beauty to express the harmony possible between art and technology, ancient and contemporary. Slightly more formal than many of the other patterns by Wilton Armetale, the classically sculpted effect is adaptable to accessorize a wide variety of classical home decorations and dinnerware patterns. The placement of the elements together directs the eye in a relaxed glance around the smooth center while mirroring itself and objects placed on the highly polished piece. The overall effect combines traditional shapes and elements with a sparkling 21st century interpretation. Its refined classical elegance is unparalleled in today's casual environment, yet is made so practical with Wilton Armetale.

Betty Crocker Decorating Cakes and Cupcakes (Betty Crocker Books) Review

Betty Crocker Decorating Cakes and Cupcakes (Betty Crocker Books)

Based on the adorable cover, I was anxious to add this book to my collection, however, I was a little disappointed once it got here. If you're going for something cute to take to your child's classroom party, or easy decorating for young children, then this book is for you. To be honest, this is just a glorified version of the Betty Crocker mini-magazines you find at a grocery store check out (as a matter of fact, I own one of those, and there are repeats in this book). If you are thinking of purchasing this book, I recommend you flip through it at a local book store first to make sure it is the level you are looking for.

Fun and Fancy Cake Decorating: Tips and Techniques for Decorating Unique Cakes for any Occasion

What I like about this book is that she gives insider tips. She gives her history and she's all about doing things the easy way. I haven't made anything or tried the decorations yet... still amassing my collection of necessary items. It has some fun ideas, however, if you are looking for more buttercream ideas or how-to's, you're much better off just getting the Wilton 1,2,3 course books. This book is mostly about fondant. The pictures are great and I am looking forward to developing my hobby!

The Whimsical Bakehouse: Fun-to-Make Cakes That Taste as Good as They Look Review

The Whimsical Bakehouse: Fun-to-Make Cakes That Taste as Good as They Look
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book's ONLY lack is its shortness. I wanted a few hundred more pages of ideas. However, despite its brevity the book is absolutely chock-full of ideas most of which seem obvious in retrospect but I would never have thought of (a deliberately tilted cake?).
Its strengths:
(1) the recipes are really, really good. Those who remember the old Wilton cake decorating books will understand why I say that this is not always common in books about decorating cakes.
(2) the photos illustrate creative use of color and the text contains charts to explain how to reproduce the effects and generate similar ones on one's own, using the different types of food coloring available, the pros and cons of which are clearly explained.
(3) the text explains clearly how to use "wafer chocolate," which is really a malleable and dyeable form of white chocolate, for truly stunning effects.
(4) children _love_ the cakes. My five-old-daughter grabbed this book, studied it cover-to-cover, and then asked me to read it out loud to her. She will actually sit for fifteen minutes listening intently to a description of how to construct the cakes that she likes.
This really is a generous book. The cakes are spectacular enough that the authors probably could have found some way to franchise or trademark their designs and thereby made a lot of money. Perhaps they will make a lot of money selling copies of this book (I hope so) but the information is free if you check the book out of the library. They explain enough of their methods that we all can make cakes in our kitchens that make us laugh out loud. And that is a Good Thing.

Three neon-bright layers of cake, tilted at a jaunty angle and adorned with edible chocolate candles; a Jackson Pollock–inspired cheesecake spattered with chocolate, caramel, and peanut butter icing; and a swarm of plump bees perched atop a rainbow of candy-colored cupcakes—these are only a few examples of the unfettered creativity at work at the Riviera Bakehouse. There, mother-daughter bakers Kaye and Liv Hansen turn out some of the most charming, refreshingly eccentric cakes ever to grace a birthday or wedding celebration.Kaye and Liv believe that a cake should taste as good as it looks, so they skip esoteric (and inedible) decorations in favor of simple buttercream, flavored whipped cream, and tinted candymaker's chocolate, covering their luscious cakes with amusing designs and gorgeous color that are easy to make and delicious to eat. The cakes themselves are no less enticing, pairing old-fashioned favorites like Banana Cake and Spice Cake with sumptuous fillings such as French Custard and Chocolate Mousse. Simple step-by-step lessons, illustrated with photographs, explain how to re-create Liv's charming chocolate designs, from the bright polka dots that shine against dark chocolate glaze to the shimmering stars that adorn the enchanting "Starry Night." Templates for the delightful designs allow you to adapt these techniques to create your own unique decorations. With time-tested tips and complete information on everything from mixing colors to adjusting pan sizes, the Hansens explain all you need to know to get started. Whether you're dreaming of an elegant Chocolate Apricot Pecan Torte or a three-tiered butter cake filled with spiked mocha cream and embellished with fantastical spring flowers, The Whimsical Bakehouse is the ultimate guide to creating delicious, showstopping confections that are completely original. From the Hardcover edition.

Kaiser Bakeware Patisserie One Wire Layered Cake Cutter Review

Kaiser Bakeware Patisserie One Wire Layered Cake Cutter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I made two multi-layer cakes for two different dinner parties this week and received many compliments on the beauty of the cakes, especially the evenness of the layers. I explained to all that it was the result of this magnificent layer cake cutter with serrated wire. I decided today to send out a link to others to purchase it and Amazon seemed to be the best. I just read the reviews, however, and I am mystified at the range of responses. This cutter is absolutely perfect for me, so I can only conclude that those who have written poor reviews may not have used it as effectively as I have.
I will share with you my technique which works every time. Very simply, you must place your cake on a large flat surface to give you enough room to work the 15" cutter and use a gentle, slow sawing motion (back and forth)to cut the cake. Depending on the cake, it may take a moment or two to cut through the outer crust. Be patient. Once you cut through continue sawing gently through the cake. I have cut layers as thin as 1/4" - the easiest Dobos torte I have ever made! I have used this cutter to slice butter cakes, genoise cakes and tortes made with either bread crumbs or finely ground nuts, such as walnut, almond and hazelnut. I have not used it on chiffon cakes, flourless cakes nor bundt cakes, so I offer no opinion there.
If this wonderful cutter is not working for you it is probably not the cutter but rather ineffective technique in its use: 1)not using a gentle, slow sawing motion; 2) pushing the wire through the cake rather than sawing; 3) rushing the cutting; or 4) not having a wide flat surface upon which to work.

Wilton 2109-859 50-Piece Tool and Caddy Decorating Set Review

Wilton 2109-859 50-Piece Tool and Caddy Decorating Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love to bake. In fact, I baked my own wedding cake. Last weekend, I baked a wedding cake for a friend getting married in Boston, which was no small feat because I live in Virginia! I baked the cake in VA and drove it up, and iced it once I got there. I had to do all the smooth coat and all the detail work right at the reception hall, with people watching. I used all my wilton bags and tips to do the job, but had nothing 'nice' to carry them all in (which would have looked very professional in front of an eagerly awaiting reception hall). After seeing one of these decorator's toolboxes, I rushed to Amazon to add it to my wishlist.
2 reasons it didn't score a 5: First of all, the nice plastic molds for storing the tips do not accept any larger Wilton decorating tips like #789, or any of the longer ones such as #1L. Second of all, the lids to the toolboxes are annoying shades of pastel plastic... It looks like you are carrying around a makeup kit for Malibou Barbie.
Other than that, this is a must-have if you need to travel and decorate.

A smart and sneaky tool for professional cake decorators and novices alike, this 12-piece press set makes it easy to create dazzling designs on cupcakes, tiered cakes, sheet cakes, cheesecakes, and more. The sturdy, stencil-like plastic pieces come in the following shapes: fleur-de-lis; double heart; medallion; open heart; closed scroll; heart; large, medium and small C-scrolls; crest; double scroll; and vine. To use, simply select the desired shape and press it gently into the surface of a base-iced cake. The press leaves a visible outline in the frosting, which can then be traced over with piping gel to achieve deceptively effortless designs in a variety of seemingly complicated and intricate shapes. Also great for pressing patterns into soft cookie dough or fondant, the 12-piece cake-decorating press set measures approximately 5-1/2 by 9-2/5 by 1-2/5 inches.

Wilton Mini Ball Pan Review

Wilton Mini Ball Pan
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used this pan to make cakes decorated like Christmas ornaments, igloos, small sports balls, and the center of a large sunflower cake. It's hard to carve a shapely circle from round/square cakes, so this has been an indispensable tool in the aforementioned projects.
This is made of flimsy aluminum and requires generous greasing to avoid sticking - leave no spot ungreased! I use homemade cake release and it works better than spray (thoroughly mix 1 cup flour, 1 cup shortening, and 1 cup veggie oil - brush on pan with pastry brush and refrigerate remainder for future use). I also had to adjust my baking time/temperature to avoid any burned cakes.
All in all, I'm glad that I have 2 sets of mini ball pans for the occasional spherical cake. With Amazon's 4-for-3 promo, this ended up being a good deal for me. Just remember that greasing this sucker is essential.

I really like these cake boards. They are very fancy and add a special touch to the presentation of my cheesecakes. I sell cheesecakes and I will only use these cake boards for the pictures. So many people think I'm using a real doily. I will continue to order these Show 'N Serve Cake Boards. I just wish I could purchase them in larger quantities.

Show off your cake's piped icing, fondant draping, and rosettes without the added task of wrapping your cake board. Wilton's Show 'N Serve cake boards have the delicate look of a lace doily, but none of the doily's fragility. This scalloped-edged cake board is actually made of white corrugated cardboard, with a surface coating that's food-safe and resistant to grease and moisture. It's strong enough to support a multilayer cake, yet attractive enough to go from kitchen to table. When used with a platter, the disposable board will protect fine serveware from cuts, and when the cake is gone, the board can be placed in your yard-waste recycling bin or even composted. Each cardboard cake board in this set of 10 measures 10 inches in diameter.

Revolving Cake Decorating Stand Review

Revolving Cake Decorating Stand
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a dedicated (amateur) home baker who bakes several times a week, and there are two final frontiers still unknown to me: yeast breads and fancy layer cakes. Unlike simple Bundt cakes or single-layer cakes, layer cakes are composed of two (usually three) or more layers of carefully arranged cakes glued together with some sort of icing (fudge, chocolate, buttercream, etc.). If you're trying to assemble and frost a layer cake on a stationary cake stand, it's much harder to achieve a smooth finish when frosting the outside as you have to keep manually turning the stand, which can cause the cake to wobble and become crooked as you're trying to ice it.
I decided to take the plunge and invest in an Ateco revolving cake stand. It has a very solid cast iron base with a lovely vintage white finish and a 1/8" aluminum top. It also comes with a nonstick pad that can either be used under the stand to keep it anchored to the countertop, or on top of the stand to stabilize your layer cake.
There are several different companies (Magic Line, Wilton, Ateco) that manufacture similar cast iron revolving cake stands, but I chose Ateco based on prior brand purchases (cake decorating equipment) and the fact that the stand is constructed in the USA (other than Nordicware, Libbey and Anchor, it's increasingly difficult to find items made in-country!). It came highly recommended by America's Test Kitchen as well. The packaging was very secure and I received my stand without any scratches or dents.
This is a hefty stand, both in weight and cost, that will stand up to a lifetime of use and is well worth the investment if you're a professional baker, pastry chef, or a home cook who makes a lot of layer cakes. If you're just a casual layer cake baker, consider Ateco's US-made plastic revolving stand for 2/3 less. But this is the rare piece of kitchen equipment that is not only useful, but aesthetically pleasing as well; I leave mine displayed on my baker's rack when not in use.
If you're looking for starter ideas for layer cakes, some of my favorites are The Pastry Queen: Royally Good Recipes from the Texas Hill Country's Rather Sweet Bakery & Cafe by Rebecca Rather (Texas-inspired layer cakes and baked goods), Baked: New Frontiers in BakingKaffeehaus: Exquisite Desserts from the Classic Cafés of Vienna, Budapest, and Prague (Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito), and Kaffeehaus (Rick Rodgers).

1,000 Ideas for Decorating Cupcakes, Cookies & Cakes (1000 Series) Review

1,000 Ideas for Decorating Cupcakes, Cookies and Cakes (1000 Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was an interesting journey that surprised me in that, thinking that there might be some tutorials to go along with the photo's, this is instead literally 1000 photographs of cakes and cookies and cupcakes.
Within the covers of this paperback book are full-page or half-page or quarter-page photographs of cookies, cakes, and cupcakes that will definitely inspire. Under each photo is the name of the person that created the baked delight. Though some of these credits will be just the names of the decorators, some will have the accompanying website that you can access for further idea's. If you do go to the websites offered, there you will find more photo's along with some beautiful tutorials and/or instruction as well as more information on the decorator. So with a little extra effort, your journey will take you to many parts of the world to learn more on the photo's that piqued your interest. Each photo is full color with wonderful detail.
The book is set as such:
First there are 5 sections of groupings that showcase each set of pictures and each photo has an accompanying number.
Elegant Entertaining
Baby and Child
Holiday
Just for Fun
Weddings and Engagements
After the above groupings, the next section is "Frosting Recipes" for:
Meringue Buttercream
Simple Buttercream
Gananche
Royal Icing
2 Recipes for Fondant (as well as amounts needed to cover cakes)
Gumpaste
Marzipan
The next section of the book is labeled "Image Directory" and this is where you look up the number of the photo which is accompanied by a very short description of the baked good, which might include what type of frosting used or cookie cutter, etc.
The last section of the book is the "Contributor Directory" which lists each of the bakers and decorators, in alphabetical order, with their websites and contact information.
I think that this is a lovely book, especially for beginners, to help your decorating interest but understand that it is not a teaching book. You will have to be more of a detective with this book in that you need to check out the websites offered, which may or may not include specifics, but which will put you in contact with the artists. For those with advanced skills, perhaps you would like to look at other authors/books. Peace.

Wilton Pure White Rolled Fondant, 1-Pound 8-Ounce Review

Wilton Pure White Rolled Fondant, 1-Pound 8-Ounce
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used Wilton fondant three times now, and each time it was incredibly easy to use. It takes color well, it rolls easily and it's a champ as far as holding up and not cracking or drying too quickly. So why does it get such poor reviews? TASTE! Absolutely horrible taste. When I used Wilton (the first fondant I ever tried) I thought hey, maybe I just hate fondant. I then tried Satin Ice a few weeks ago, and the difference was incredible. Satin Ice, however, is only sold at a few locations, mostly east-coast, so despite its low cost you'll pay just about as much for the fondant as you will in shipping charges. I recently discovered an alternative that takes blends the ease of use of the Wilton fondant with the taste of the Satin Ice - I made my own! It's an incredibly easy recipe with only three ingredients - marshmallows, water and confectioner's sugar. You can also add in orange or vanilla extract for added flavor. Making your own fondant is cheap, easy and it tastes very good. Recipe is easily found online (I didn't create it so I don't want to post it here). I recommend skipping the Wilton fondant and making your own!

The Cake Lady Airbrush Techniques DVD Review

The Cake Lady Airbrush Techniques DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm afraid this DVD was very disappointing, especially considering the price.
Though the summary implies a lot of content, the video is less than an hour (which I already knew) but the topics and detail covered could have easily been covered in 30 minutes.
1-how to assemble/disassemble an airbrush.
2-a few practise drills
3-how to make & use a stencil
4-portraiture
That's really it.
1-she doesn't really go over the various parts of the unit and their names. I think she could have said a lot more here.
2-this was the most useful part of the video. This part I liked.
3-handy to know, but this could have been explained in less than 5 mins.
4-She did 2 faces and she really should have just done the 2nd one. All she did is show the exact same techniques all over again and I really felt this served no purpose. If I wanted to repeat an exercise, I could simply rewind the chapter.
The final cake she does, the alpine scene, was...well...I hate to say it, since I love The Cake Lady...but it was dreadful.
I tried to consider that these were filmed a while ago and styles change, things become dated... but I honestly think this looked dreadful even from an early-mid 80's point of view.
If I had paid for this myself, I'd only be annoyed but this was on my wishlist and was purchased as a gift for me.
When asked how I liked the gift, I got embarrassed as I had to lie and said I loved it. Very awkward.
Turns out the information I wanted was available on her Decorating Techniques DVD which I didn't know until the very end of this DVD when they show some teasers of her other stuff. Frustrating.
I will say, the bit at the end of her cake decorating museum was nice, though. I was glad I got to see that.
