Cake Decorating at Home Review

Cake Decorating at Home
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bravo to Ms. Clark on her cake decorating book debut! An experienced cake decorator but new to the publishing field, Zoe Clark has hit a home run with her first foray into the field of teaching and writing. This 128 page, soft cover book is quite a thorough class in the basics of cake decorating and through simple, yet well-written direction, she will take anyone from a novice or an intermediate cake decorator, and teach them well.
And it all seems to have started after she created and baked her own wedding cake back in 2005. From there she went off to work with top UK cake designers then opened her own shop in 2008. The projects will be challenging enough for the beginner and intriging enough for the intermediate decorator. Those with either high-level or professional-level talent will find this a wonderful reference guide for those they teach.
This book has been identified for the home decorator and so the projects would be those that are basic but still pretty and elegant. And the family can definitely be involved in the projects as some are quite simple and any extra hands in the kitchen when preparing cakes and such, are always welcome!
While there are 10 actual cake projects to enjoy, Ms. Clark begins the book with a solid Introduction and solid Conclusion of this work. There are bountiful photo's both close-up and distant, and while there aren't detailed step-by-step pictorials, you have all the visuals you need. I was very impressed with the amount of detail she put into the "Basic Techniques" section; she covered everything and this was definitely one of the better books in this area. It is sectioned as such:
INTRODUCTION
BAKING ESSENTIALS and GENERAL EQUIPMENT
CREATIVE TOOLS
BASIC TECHNIQUES: Preparing cake tins/layering, filling and preparing cakes to be covered/carving and sculpting the cake/covering with marzipan and sugarpaste/working with shaped cakes/ using icing boards/securing ribbon around cake boards/assembling tiered cakes/cake stands/mini-cake assembly/baking cupcakes/decorating cupcakes/fondant-dipped cupcakes/petit fours/baking cookies/covering ccokies with sugarpaste/royal iced cookies/run-out icing/drop-in flooding/making a piping bag/working with flowerpaste/coloring icings.
BASIC CAKE RECIPES: This was a wonderful section with several charts to help with determining cake size, ingredient amounts, filling amounts, portions, etc. Of course, there are the recipes for Classic Sponge Cake, Chocolate Cake, White Chocolate Cake, Fruit Cake, flavoring, fillings, buttercream, and sugar syrups.
THE PROJECTS: With each project, she also gives you "theme" ideas which add just the right touch!
1) Daisy Chain Days: Cover photo of a mini daisy cake beset by surrounding daisy cupcakes; fresh and clean; just right for a Springtime celebration!
2) Baby's Special Sewing Box: A patchwork cake that at first, seemed difficult in how to piece the fondant together but when studied, is quite easy. The pastel colors are enchanting, with the addition of fondant stars and hearts and circles, and the use of a stitching tool to make "seams" makes this a mighty fetching "quilt" for baby!
3) A Birthday in Technicolor: A 2-tiered chocolate birthday cake with lollipop cookies and fondant streamers gently placed on the cake. The matching cupcakes are bedecked with stars and sprinkles to coordinate the colors.
4) Summer Seaside Celebration: This was adorable! A pale blue "sand pail" cake with seashells and starfish on the top of the brown sugar sand! Seashell cookies, bikini cookies, and frangipane blooms finish the scene. She placed the sand pail atop a white cake pedestal; how beautiful!!
5) Cherry Blossom Breeze: Now this one was my favorite and making the cherry blossoms was a breeze, yet they were so delicate and fragile looking, that is was a joy to make these; the petals are one shape of 3 descending sizes, stacked upon each other with the edges of each petal trimmed in edible gold dust. The cake was one of the simplest in which you have 2 graduated square cakes, stacked, with their bases wrapped in a wide fondant ribbon. These ribbons are covered with simple shades of the pink/red color family of dainty little flowers. The cherry blossoms come in as the 2 large main ornaments, each placed on one tier. Matching petit fours and lantern cookies complete the presentation. Very elegant but dramatic!
6) A Magical Tea Party: This will be the most fun to make!! An "Alice in Wonderland" party complete with a Mad Matter Cake as well as a Wonky Cake with a Teacup atop! Teapot and teacup cookies make this perfect for any little girl!
7) Dressed All in White: Ethereal!! Floating tiers hold a square wedding cake of 3 graduated tiers covered in ivory fondant, and with the use of cel boards, white "lace" is applied to the cakes with delicate scalloped edges. The placement of mini cakes, with delicate butterflies perched atop as if ready to fly away, as well as wedding cake cookies, made this photo a dream!
8) A Secret Garden Party: This was amazing to behold! So simple in its construction but just breathtaking in its presentation. A white dome-shaped "birdcage" all in white with brown fondant "wrought-iron" strips with scroll designs at the bottom of the cage, begins this project. A pastel pink royal icing bird is perched on one of the scrolls as tiny, delicate pink and white roses are scattered all about the cage. Birdcage cookies and domed cupakes in silver liners and pastel icing, toped with larger roses, and "wrought-iron" icing from center to edge of the cupcake, complete this dream of an idea.

9) A Gift-Wrapped Christmas: This would be the crown jewel centerpiece of your Christmas sweet table. 2 graduated boxes, one in white fondant and the other in red, wrapped in fondant ribbons and bows with tiny holly, berries, and polka dots! Festive Christmas trees and candy cane cookies would welcome Santa anytime!
10) Dressing Up Box: This was quite different in its conception and design. 3 white, graduated round cakes with each layer being decorated either in white chocolate panels, ruffles, or scalloped trim at the base. The theme is black and white (with a single pink rose on top the cake) and while it is more modern in thought, it is rather impressive in sight. Shoe cookies and mini cakes matching the various layers is quite eye-catching.

I was very much impressed with this book, perhaps because I so much enjoy the delicacy and femininity of the projects. The colors were all joyous and enchanting. But the real pull for me was the manner in which Ms. Clark taught and the attention to how best to get her ideas across without too much fuss or unnecessary detail. I admit to not having started on any one cake just yet but I have enjoyed doing the side projects offered. Nonetheless, this one is a keeper. Peace!

Cakes for Romantic Occasions Review

Cakes for Romantic Occasions
Average Reviews:

I buy a lot of cake books off the reviews - because lets face it - we are the real judges not the book critics. I have about 20+ cake decorating books and this has to be one of the best ever. Not only does it give your great recipes (more than boring maderia) but portion sizing too! So many cake fall from grace because of their lack of pictures and instruction - this has it in spades. Well set out, well written and the photos are just what you need and none of what you don't.
The whole idea of this book is to inspire. It's brilliant and certainly does inspire you to come up with something unique for your own cake decorating future.

Cakes by Design: The Magical World of Sugar Art

This book has literally changed my life! I bought it when I decided to try my hand at wedding cake decorating and through their detailed descriptions of how to create beautiful gum paste flowers and their delicious cake recipes, I've launched a new career. The (many) photographs are beautiful and the cakes range from the most basic designs to elaborate masterpieces. Anyone who has ever wanted to try their hand at sculpting flowers from sugar needs to buy this book.

Their specialty cakes have astounded and drawn raves from such clients as Tiffany, Cartier, Bloomingdales, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Vogue, and their wedding cakes have graced the pages of Bride's Little Book of Cakes and Toasts, Bride's, and Martha Stewart's Weddings. Scott Clark Woolley is, quite simply, the master of the stunning-to-behold yet easy-to-learn art of sugar paste flowers, used as both cake decorations and freestanding ornaments. In their popular classes in New York City, Woolley and Farace taught absolute beginners how to make strikingly realistic flowers in one session, with a technique that is unique and easy to learn. Assembled in this book is fifteen years' worth of know-how, the most complete construction and idea book on sugar paste flowers and ornaments. The book includes step-by-step instructions on how to make dozens of varieties of flowers, detailed information on the tools one needs to get started, delicious cake recipes, and a profusion of inspirational photographs, showing finished cakes and centerpieces that will delight both professionals and at-home cake decorators, inspiring them to achieve both simple and simply spectacular sugar art creations.

Wilton Fondant Book Review

Wilton Fondant Book
Average Reviews:

I really love this book as a beginner. I'm currently taking the fondant and gum paste course by Wilton. This book is a great progression from what you learn in the course. Many of the ideas are doable from the beginner level and of course they throw in some extremely impressive designs that are for someone who is more advanced or looking for a challenge. I'm very glad I took the course because Wilton does some things that don't make a whole lot of sense when your following their instructions. Like they will tell you to use a leave shaped cutter to cut out a peice of gum paste then they will tell you to roll it into a ball (seems silly to use the shape but the shape is the amount of gum pasted you needed via Wilton world). Overall some great ideas and well written.

Fairytale Cakes: 17 Enchanted Creations Review

Fairytale Cakes: 17 Enchanted Creations

First off the book starts out with recipes for cakes, frosting and how to make your own fondant, I thought that was a great detail in the book. The directions were well written to make the figurines for each cake. Some of the bigger projects actually had patterns in the book as well. The designs in this book were not was I was looking for, I wanted more princess stuff and there were none in here.

Pressure Piping (Sugar Inspiration Series) Review

Pressure Piping (Sugar Inspiration Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
FAWN ALERT: I loved this book! Apparently tripping over with complete joy of certain cake and baking books has sometimes earned me accusations of working for the authors involved. To the contrary, I am an eager, non-professional cake and baking fool who has no shame in praising well-written books for the likes of people like myself. This one is no different.
Lesley Herbert and Sue Ballard penned this lovely tutorial back in 1999. I just found it thanks to the "recommendations" by our friends here at Amazon. They really came up with a winner! It is a small (7" x 9"), thin, 48-page paperback book that gives the most delicate basics of pressure piping using the royal icing medium in different consistencies.
While I would heartily encourage anyone with a love for royal icing as an exciting medium for creating incredible works of pressure art, you do need to have the basics of cake decorating in that some parts of these projects assume you are in command of the fundamentals.
After the very short "Introduction", there is the "Basic Recipe" for Royal Icing used by Ms. Herbert and Ms. Ballard, along with the "Techniques", which include the consistencies needed for the particular project, as well as the pressures used for piping the basic shapes. There are many clear photos of these techniques as well as step-by-step photography of how you begin the shape from the first piping to the last finishing touch.
Accompanying the photography are drawings to be used as templates, which can be increased in size to fit on your cakes and other projects. The characters and shapes of figures and figurines are just exquisite and all call for a steady and patient hand. A photo of the completed project accompanies each section, giving the reader the visual ways that each shape can be used.
The projects are:
How To Pipe Birds: A hummingbird or hovering bird, a stork with and without a baby bundle, duckling and Mama duck, doves, bluebirds.
A Christening Cake: A lovely bib, baby booties, swans, rattles and ribbons, and a sled.
Welcome Baby Egg: Decorated chocolate eggs with flowers and ribbons and bows, baskets, and bunnies too!
Springtime Motifs: Chicks pulling flower-filled eggshells, birds on a branch, chicks in a nest, bunnies, and lambs.
Pressure Piping Flowers: Piping petals for daisies, narcissus, violets, forget-me-knots, and pansies.
Pressure Piping Roses: Minature, small, and big roses.
Pressure Piping Leaves: How to make a leaf piping bag from parchment paper, small and large leaves, and holly.
Christmas Sleigh Cake: A beautiful Christmas cake with a sleigh, reindeer, Christmas bells, candles, candy canes, Rudolph, Santa, and Christmas trees.
Pressure Piping Figures: This was the one that I was most interested in learning! Though this is very enjoyable, it is the most frustrating when first learning in that you need just the slightest of hand pressure to create these delicate figures of "ladies and gentlemen of the court".
Three-Tiered Wedding Cake: This is an extraordinary chapter that presents a very pristine wedding cake that somewhat contains certain aspects of Australian/Lambeth decorating. Combine that with the artistry that Lesley and Susan show you with the human figures, and you have a show-stopper to be sure!
Cherubs/Ballerina's: 2 more sections of wonderful piping of those angelic bodies and faces as well as the prim and proper ballerina's who look ready to dance for you.
Teddy Bears/ Animals: The last 2 projects to help round off your skill set. The animals include elephants, cow, dogs, pigs, rabbits, pandas and lions.
TEMPLATES: As mentioned before, many of the chapters have templates on their project pages but for the rest, this section has the remaining characters and shapes for which the other chapters did not have room.
Another cake deorating tutorial treasure! Peace!

I had to wait 5 weeks for this book to get to me{out of print} & i'm glad Amazon could get it for me.I have just about every book this Author has made & i love them all.As long as you have a little bit of icing decorating experience you can use any of his books. The only reason i rated it 4 stars instead of 5 is because not all the pictures are in color. It does however show the finished product in color. As a matter of fact it will show it in several different colors & on different cakes. What it will show you how to do is bag striping, holly & dogwood leaves, rosebuds, foliage, pinecone, orchid, daffodils, drop flowers, poinsettia, candle, rose, chrysanthemums, pansies, violets, carnations, dahlias and daises.Whew! Alot of stuff in a thin book.

I always enjoy looking at any of Colette's books. While I personally find several of the designs a bit over the top for my, and most of my bride's, tastes, her creativity is astounding! There are quite a few nice, more toned-down designs as well. The directions are very clear and detailed, unlike some other "celebrity" cake decorators who want to sell books, yet not give away any of their "secrets". Her cakes are interesting to look at, and great for coming up with new ideas, perfect for someone who is looking for something different. I'm always amazed by her creations!

Planet Cake Review

Planet Cake
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What an absolute treat!!! Fun, whimsical, and creative idea's all put into a great cake decorating book!
I had first heard of the Planet Cake Shoppe when I had been perusing the Flickr website, and had looked into their baking section. There are untold joys of finding cakes, cookies, and such that are decorated by both non-professional and professionals alike. It was during one of my sojourns that I noted that they were coming out with a cake decorating book and I wasted no time in acquiring it.I needed to go through the "New and Used" section at Amazon in order to acquire it, but I'm hoping that they will be able to get it for the baking faithful soon.
Planet Cake is owned and operated by Paris Culter, who started in finances but had been pulled to cake baking and decorating because that was her real love. With the help and support of husband, family, and friends, plus an incredibly talented staff, Planet Cake stands out as a creative and "outside-the-box" cake company, which has catered to the likes of the average Joe to celebrity events such as the wedding cake for Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban.
For those who are skilled or advanced bakers and decorators, this might be a bit too basic for you, though you will find the idea's refreshing and fun. For those who are just beginning, this is an excellent teacher and guide that will make your work a showstopper the first time out. Large, clear print plus close, vibrant photo's are the reason I found this so helpful. The only drawback I found was that when you began the actual decorating projects themselves, rather than have photo's of all steps involved in the decorating process, colored pencils drawing were used; they were large and detailed enough, but for my thought, I'd rather see photographs. Nonetheless, it doesn't detract from the learning.
Paris begins her book with her WELCOME and ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS which are sincere and heartening. You do not get to her level of notoriety without the help of really good, trustworthy folks who are as committed to your vision as you are.
"STARTING POINTS" helps you to understand how you must build your foundation of knowledge in order to eventually get to the top.
"HOW TO USE THIS BOOK" brings you to the basics of cake design and temperment; how to prepare, how to design, how to transport, etc all in the mode of giving a solid education of the basics of what to do first. Full page photographs of Icing Equipment, Edible Decorations and Materials, Ganaching Equipment, Decorating Equipment are presented with the tools numbered explained, and it finished with a detailed Glossary. All templates for the projects are included.
"CAKE RECIPES": In making batters for cupcakes, box mixes might be OK, but for cakes, especially those that are to be created and decorated for special events, you need a strong batter that will hold up to the layers of coverings and fillings that will weigh upon them; box mixes will not do. Hence, Paris gives you Vanilla Cupcakes, Chocolate Mud Cake, Carrot Cake, White Chocolate Mud Cake, Coconut Cake, and Flourless Orange and Almond Cake (for those who are dairy and gluten sensitive--woo hoo!!).
"ICING RECIPES": Ganache (methods for both stove and microwave, Syrup, Rolled Fondant Icing, and Royal Icing.
"TECHNIQUES": How to ganach cupcakes, round cakes, square cakes, shaped cakes, 3-D cakes, plus cutting and ganaching rectangular cakes.
"USING READY-TO-ROLL FONDANT": You can make fondant or buy it already made, but there are peculiarities to it, and she gives you the 411; especially with those tricky corners. She shows you how to use it to cover cupcakes, round cakes, square cakes, and shaped cakes.
"COVERING A BOARD WITH ICING": This makes the presentation look finished and coordinated with your masterpiece. You can cover the whole cakeboard, or cover a board around the cake for both regular and shaped cakes.
"TECHNIQUES, TIPS, and TROUBLESHOOTING": How to color icing, how to use a pasta machine for rolling out your fondant, glazing icing, smaking gluing icing for pieces that you attach to the cake, making tassels, piping with royal icing, tracing letters, applying edible glitter, making a bow, making a "zipper" for the purse cake, covering acetate film (this is a wonderful tool for making and applying chocolate and other mediums), making sand icing, making coals, frilling of fondant, basic painting, making an icing roll, marking a paper cupcake case, making a template, how to use a DIY board (helps you to move your cake more easily), mending torn icing (and this happens to everyone eventually!!), covering up cracked icing, mending cracked icing, cleaning stained icing, dealing with humidity, too dry icing, too wet icing, and air bubbles. Whew!!!! She sure covers everything---lucky us!!!
"CUPCAKES": This is what got me to her book; I just love the cupcakes!!! My favorites were the Babyface Cupcakes (absolutely perfect for that really special baby shower; so cute and fairly easy to create!!). She also teaches Bow Cupcakes (pink cupcakes with a thin, black bow across; elegant!), Dragonfly Cupcakes (purple cupakes with 3-D dragonflies popping out; very pretty for a spring party); Honeybee Cupcakes (big, bright yellow and brown "bees" with little antennae's!), Green Monster Cupcakes (very green, very easy to make, and very boyish!), Ladybug Cupcakes (like the bees but red and black), Pirate Cupcakes (cute 'Matey cupcake face complete with headscarf, earring, and eyepatch!), Naughty Kids Cupcakes (same facial theme that you can match to whomever your "naughty" kid is!), Crying Babies Cupcakes (too cute with facial cupcakes that have a wide-open mouth and 2 budding teeth on their top gum!).
"ROUND CAKES": Racing Car Cake (a round cake with flat racing cars applied round the cake base; very clever and a great project for a beginner), Round Pirate Cake (perfect with the Pirate Cupcakes, and again, a simple project), Round Present Cake (simple, easy to make, yet elegant round cake with a lovely fondant bow), Princess Cake (lovely, frill-edged cake), Lollipop Cake (very clever and very simple to make in which you insert a dowel at the bottom of the cake and put a fondant bow).
"SQUARE CAKES": Boat Cake (any little sailor---or even a not so little sailor, would love this with its appliques of a boat on the cake along with a fondant life preserver, and nautical rope), Briefcase Cake (a bit more involved but well worth the time), Exploding Star Cake ( multi-colored fondant star appliques and ribbon with fondant stars on wires bursting out of the center of the cake), Record Player Cake (for those of us old folks who remember record players and vinyl discs---yikes!---this is for you; you wouldn't know it from the real thing!; a bit for the more advanced baker, me thinks); and Make-Up Box (simple but adorable).
"SHAPED CAKES": Flag Cake (simple in its concept but so beautiful in the execution b/c you can do so much with color and decor), Ice Cream Cake (this was sooo cute; it looks like a FreezePop that had the top half dipped in dripping chocolate); Flip Flop Cake (super great!! A simple, flat cake who's shape is cut out in sandal form then decorated with "straps" and flowers); Rocket Cake (another simple shape that once decorated with multicolored fondant of stars and stripes, is out of this world---no pun intended, well....actually it was------too cute!); Boot Cake (this cake rocks; it really looks like a ladies go-go boot complete with high heel and bow; awesome!!).
"3-D CAKES": Airplane Cake (this really looks like a infants stuffed airplane that they would carry around, complete with eyes and nose , windows, and wings); BBQ Cake (this looks like a real Weber BBQ grill complete w/ hotdogs, kebobs, chicken---all made from fondant); Giant Cupcake (for this you could use the giant cupcake mold pan and still use the decorating ideas here, if you wish, but if you don't, the cake shaping steps are here), Paint Tube Cake (a giant paint tube); Handbag Cake (outstanding!!! The cover photo of the beautiful handbag with zipper, initial, diamond fabric pattern!).
This book has been a real treasure to find and a treat to read. Consider checking their website, or look for Planet Cake on Flickr. Peace.

I bought this book because of the beautiful lacy detail work Sylvia does on her cakes, but the more I looked at the cakes in the photos, the more I kept saying, there is something wrong with the way these look. Sylvia uses very large separator plates and does not blend in the base to the top of the cakes. The look is very distracting to the overall presentation. It is a shame because many of her designs are so elegant. I would not reccomend this book as a sole source of cake decorating tips.

Attention to detail and perfection in execution are the trademarks of the cakes featured in The Ultimate Book of Wedding Cakes by Lesley Herbert. In this picture-filled book, Herbert features over 30 original wedding cake designs.
Herbert features a variety of wedding cakes in this book. The techniques that she features for decorators are rolled fondant (sugarpaste), royal icing, pattern transfer, piped embroidery, color flow collars (floodwork), and frills. While the majority of cakes are coated in marzipan and sugarpaste, she also includes a cake done in buttercream and a cake covered in a white chocolate ganache. The most valuable part of the book for me was the 14 pages of templates at the back of the book. The embroidery templates are simple, classic, and elegant.
The strengths of this book are in the detailed instructions Herbert provides on how to reproduce these cakes. From the templates to pictures of stages of construction, these instructions are clear and well-written. All of the metrics provided have been converted to inches for decorators outside of the UK. In the Acknowledgements section, Herbert provides a list of suppliers that were used in the creation of this book. Herbert also has included 4 pages on pillars and stands featured in the book.
While Herbert sets the expectations of anyone using this book, it is a good resource for advanced decorators. The step-by-step instructions and detailed photographs will make sense to experienced cake professionals and enthusiasts.
