(More customer reviews)I got this book out of the library, along with "Bouquets: A Year of Flowers for the Bride" and the Knot book, and I would have to say, this was by far the least useful. For one thing, there was nothing simple about it-- the arrangements either involved mountains of flowers, or varieties of orchids I had never seen anywhere else, or arrangements that were closer to balancing acts. There is one picture that seemed to have literally hundreds of calla lillies around a doorway. Come on!
Compared to the Bouquets book, which offered a lot of variety and was pretty creative, this just seemed like a lot of lilies & orchids & roses, and compared to the Knot book, it wasn't as practical, cost effective, or even very descriptive. I am not a fan of the Knot website, but surprisingly, I found their flower book the most informative. I would recommend either book over this one.

(More customer reviews)I never can keep a copy of Weddings for Dummies; I no sooner buy one and I give it as a gift. I bought my first copy because someone told me that the information on flower arrangements would be helpful, even though the event in question was not a wedding. My last copy of Weddings for Dummies is on a shelf in Maine where it did duty in the planning of my son's wedding (a wedding of which Marcy Blum should be proud). When I ordered the Wedding Kit for Dummies, I thought I was replacing my Weddings for Dummies; what I got was a fantastic supplement to Weddings for Dummies, an entirely new book replete with software to make even the most disorganized person an organized party planner. The original book enables the bride-to-be to plan the wedding of her dreams, down to the smallest detail. The new book allows those dreams to take wing; it is a comprehensive "how to do it" book. The CD has forms, contracts and even spread sheets to keep track of expenses. There are checklists for things that most people might not even think of on their own, but which make a special event even more special...like how to evaluate a potential reception site. There are website addresses and sensible advice on how to use the Internet to obtain information and goods. I found the chapter entitled Ten Amazing Places for Destination weddings and Honeymoons especially interesting (I always wondered what it cost to get married at Disneyworld!) In short, if you cannot have Marcy Blum plan your wedding, this is the next best thing. If you are planning on giving this book as an engagement gift, pair it with the first book; the two together are indispensable references for planning the perfect wedding. Marcy Blum and Laura Fisher Kaiser have given us a glimpse of why books will not go the way of dinosaurs, a book that can actually help us interact better with the Internet rather than being replaced by it.

(More customer reviews)I can't believe how informative this book is. It tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about planning your wedding. It has forms for you to fill out everything pertaining to the big day...jot down who is going to be in the bridal party, what food do you want to serve, etc. It tells you how to get a caterer, florist, photographer, etc, and tells you all the questions you need to ask them beforehand to make sure you're getting the best value for your money. It also explains how everything is done in Christian and Jewish ceremonies. There are so many things in here you would never even think of...how to set a budget once you are married, what forms of birth control to use, it explains all the different styles of gowns and veils, tells you what the mother of the groom and bride are supposed to do, who pays for what, and there is a calender for you and him for each month to tell you what needs to get done. If you thought of it, it's in here. They even give you suggestions of what song you could dance the first dance to, how to preserve your dress, and more. This is a REALLY great deal on a wedding planner.

My main and only problem of the book is where is the "budget" aspect of the book as it says in the title. They offer numerous and helpful tips and advice about planning a wedding, even an elegant wedding. But for those actually looking for advice on keeping a wedding under a limited budget, this isn't the book. For real and practical budget advice, I recomend Bridal Bargains by D. Fields.

(More customer reviews)I've read three different wedding planning books, and this one is absolutely the worst. I actually took this book quite seriously when I first began planning my wedding, but then after going through all the different tasks involved with planning the wedding, I re-read the book to see if I missed anything or could do anything better. After spending a few hours re-reading this book, I was shocked at all the misleading information in it... not to mention the snobbiness of the person/people who wrote it! I was so mad I almost threw this useless book straight in the garbage!
For example, the "average" costs and price ranges of nearly every item they list is WAY off. I think they must assume that every bride is going to spend $100,000 to get hitched... and that mommy and daddy are paying for everything (they even give you a "tip" advising you to "act" grateful for your parents' money).
The tips they give for couples on a budget are the most harmful and misleading part. We are planning a wedding on a budget, as are most brides and grooms now-a-days who aren't the children of millionaires. For example, in response to one of the questions asking if it is okay to have a cash bar at the reception, they advise you to NEVER EVER EVER have a cash bar, and, if it is absolutely necessary to save money, limit the number of hours your guests can get alcoholic beverages. HUH? So a bride and groom, trying to save money, will now think they are bad hosts because The Knot told them they have to spend hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars they do not have just so their guests can get drunk.
Another thing, as I mentioned before, is that their price estimates are way off. For example, they lists wedding gowns as being between $700 and $15,000. While that can certainly be true, you can find a WIDE selection of wonderfully beautiful wedding dresses for FAR less than $700! In fact, there are entire chains of wedding stores in which almost every dress is under $500! The problem with this is that some poor unsuspecting bride is probably going to pay way more for her dress (a dress she will only wear once, mind you) than she needs to, just because this book told her the low range for a wedding gown is $700. (Just so you are aware, future brides, I bought my wedding gown, a Gloria Vanderbuilt a-line gown with a five-foot train, all lace above the waist and along the hem of the dress, for $250 at David's Bridal. Do NOT be fooled by the price ranges in this book! You CAN and WILL get a beautiful dress that everyone will love for FAR less than this book estimates!)
Also, they are missing important information in the photography section... the digital revolution. They talk about black-and-white film... FORGET FILM!!! Nearly every photographer now uses both film and digital, and oftentimes a digital camera will give you as-good or BETTER quality than film. Plus, you can choose from black-and-white, full color, partial color, or sepia on any photo taken. Also, in the video department, practically no one puts their wedding footage on videotape anymore. This book is completely out-of-date.
Wedding invitations do NOT have to be done by a professional. While it's nice to have beautiful-looking invitations, you CAN get this by making them at home. Invitation kits can be purchased for very little money, but they have everything you need to create beautiful invitations in a very short amount of time with very little effort on your part. You can do this for a large, formal affair, not just a "small or less formal affair" like this book suggests. And with the number of fonts you have on modern computers, and people's tendency to have bad handwriting in an age where everything is typed, why on EARTH would you hand-write a hundred and fifty address envelopes, like this book advises?!? Like I said, out-of-date.Honestly, you'd be better off figuring it out yourself than listening to anything written in this book. There are VERY few actually useful tips in here and most of it is common sense (if you're not an idiot, that is). This book is written by snobs who think that every wedding must be a fairytale wedding that costs tens of thousands of dollars (if not hundreds of thousands) and provide horrible advise for brides who have no experience with organizing a wedding and are trying to do so without going bankrupt before they even begin their lives together with their new husbands. AVOID!

They continually insist that everyone NEEDS a bridal consultant and that a wedding gown should only be purchased through an expensive private boutique. I found many other wedding books to be so much more helpful that I suggest looking around some more before buying this book. Denise Fields and Diane Warner are some authors who HAVE created some excellent books.
