Hollywood Gets Married Review

Hollywood Gets Married

Sandy Schreier's "Hollywood Gets Married" is a delectable bon-bon of a book, and great reading for anyone who is either starstruck or interested in movie costume design. She admits in her foreword to being subject to those twin little girls dreams of a) being a movie star and b) being a bride, and her infectious enthusiasm for both subjects comes across brilliantly here.
Schreier offers us a delightful overview of Hollywood weddings here, with everything from silent films to modern-day set pieces to real-life Hollywood brides in both their Hollywood and their personal incarnations as brides. As you might expect, there are some omissions here (what, no Liza Minnelli? No Cher? No Lucille Ball? No Jane Fonda?), but for the most part, Schreier does a super job of hitting high points of Hollywood wedding lore including, of course, the much-married Elizabeth Taylor (who graces the front cover of the book and gets her own special section inside).
Aside from the terrific photographs--many of which I'd never seen, and I own entirely too many movie-oriented books--the eye candy is more than matched by the many anecdotes, like:
1) Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy's bridal gown designer was African-American;
2) "Bride of Frankenstein" actress Elsa Lanchester's bridal hairdo in the film was inspired by ancient profiles of Egyptian queen Nefertiti;
3) Olivia de Havilland kept her Dior costumes from the 1962 bridal picture "Light in the Piazza" and when she sold them later at auction, the successful bidder was the House of Dior, buying them for their collection;
4) Marilyn Monroe's gown from her first marriage (at age sixteen in 1942) was later worn, sans sleeves, by Monroe's niece on her first date.
This is a wonderful book and reading it is a completely pleasant way to spend an hour or two.

Everyone loves weddings, and celebrity weddings—full of spectacle and scandal—are the best of all. This amazing pictorial history of Hollywood matrimony brings us to hundreds of weddings, both on-screen and off, from the 1920s to today."When I was a little girl, I dreamt about two things: being a bride and being a movie star," writes Sandy Schreier in the introduction to Hollywood Gets Married. Like many of us, Schreier grew up admiring the stars of her era, and she delighted in their weddings, both on-screen and off. Now, in a gorgeous and comprehensive pictorial history, she chronicles the glamour and the glitz of Hollywood nuptials. From Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier to Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett, from the original Father of the Bride to Four Weddings and a Funeral, Hollywood Gets Married takes us on a sentimental and humorous journey through the most memorable unions of the twentieth century. With hundreds of carefully researched photographs and informative captions, Hollywood Gets Married provides an insider's look at the behind-the-scenes details of movie and real-life weddings: descriptions of the costume designs, photography, bridesmaids' dresses, food, and exploits of offscreen in-laws and wedding guests and, of course, the bride and groom. Hollywood Gets Married collects in its pages the most unforgettable marriage moments of our time, the ones we love to watch again and again. No fan of movies—or weddings!—will want to be without this exciting and unique celebration of cultural history.

Fox Run Wedding Cookie Cutter Set Review

The dimensions for the package are about 7in x 7in. One could deduce from the photo that the 5 cookie cutters would be about 1/2 that size, but in fact they are only about 2.5 inches each. This is considerably smaller than I had hoped, but they are cute.

The Complete Outdoor Wedding Planner: From Rustic Settings to Elegant Garden Parties, Everything You Need to Know to Make Your Day Special Review

The Complete Outdoor Wedding Planner: From Rustic Settings to Elegant Garden Parties, Everything You Need to Know to Make Your Day Special

When I bought this book I was assuming--perhaps naively--that its title meant that the book would focus on specific things you need to know when planning an outdoor wedding. I hoped that it would be able to help me with such nitty-gritty details as planning for the possibility of rain and dealing with rentals of items such as chairs and tables. Instead, I found that the book was, in essence, a wedding planner almost exactly like every other wedding planner on the market, complete with a checklist of what-to-do-when, a breakdown of the expenses according to who "traditionally" pays for them, and pages and pages of advice on picking out the dress and the cake. Her advice on making a backup plan for rain was confined to one paragraph, the essence of which was "Make sure you have a backup plan for rain." Not one word on how to go about making such a plan (okay, she did have a short section on the advantages of booking a site with both indoor and outdoor accommodations, but what about those of us who want to use a state park where the only shelter is a pavilion without sides)? As for rentals, there isn't even a listing in the index for them. My advice: if you're looking for details, don't bother with this book. You can find better information on the Web for nothing.

I'm in my 40s and getting married for the first--and only--time in a few months. My fiance was feeling a little left out of the planning process, so I bought 2 copies of this book, one for him and one for myself. It's been a great discussion tool, and we've both made lots of notes all over the pages. The book covers the details of wedding planning but with a focus on keeping the relationship and the meaning of the celebration central. No matter what other planning guides you own -- and you will need others that do go bananas over flowers and bridesmaids' dresses if that's your thing, and God knows there are plenty of them out there-- please pick up a copy, or two, of this one. It lets you convert the stress and commericalism of planning your wedding into a relationship-deepening experience.

Each year, millions of couples wed, and millions of relationships — involving brides, grooms, families, and friends — are undermined by power struggles, fights, and stress before the big event arrives. Often overrun by others' demands, couples may be too exhausted to experience the outpouring of love meant for them. Now savvy brides and grooms can turn to The Smart Couple's Guide to the Wedding of Your Dreams. It encourages couples to explore their wedding desires, be realistic about budgets, and be firm in their decisions, and it walks them through practical steps to make these goals a reality. Co-written by two therapists, themselves a happily married team, the book emphasizes recapturing the meaning and joy of the occasion while making informed choices together. Each chapter provides exercises and suggestions to help with specific decisions on vows, location, parents' roles, and more, ultimately showing couples how to express their style while honoring family and religious traditions. These decision-making skills also help establish a precedent for a long and happy marriage.
