Wilton 2109-859 50-Piece Tool and Caddy Decorating Set Review

I love to bake. In fact, I baked my own wedding cake. Last weekend, I baked a wedding cake for a friend getting married in Boston, which was no small feat because I live in Virginia! I baked the cake in VA and drove it up, and iced it once I got there. I had to do all the smooth coat and all the detail work right at the reception hall, with people watching. I used all my wilton bags and tips to do the job, but had nothing 'nice' to carry them all in (which would have looked very professional in front of an eagerly awaiting reception hall). After seeing one of these decorator's toolboxes, I rushed to Amazon to add it to my wishlist.
2 reasons it didn't score a 5: First of all, the nice plastic molds for storing the tips do not accept any larger Wilton decorating tips like #789, or any of the longer ones such as #1L. Second of all, the lids to the toolboxes are annoying shades of pastel plastic... It looks like you are carrying around a makeup kit for Malibou Barbie.
Other than that, this is a must-have if you need to travel and decorate.

Wilton Pure White Rolled Fondant, 1-Pound 8-Ounce Review

Wilton Pure White Rolled Fondant, 1-Pound 8-Ounce
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used Wilton fondant three times now, and each time it was incredibly easy to use. It takes color well, it rolls easily and it's a champ as far as holding up and not cracking or drying too quickly. So why does it get such poor reviews? TASTE! Absolutely horrible taste. When I used Wilton (the first fondant I ever tried) I thought hey, maybe I just hate fondant. I then tried Satin Ice a few weeks ago, and the difference was incredible. Satin Ice, however, is only sold at a few locations, mostly east-coast, so despite its low cost you'll pay just about as much for the fondant as you will in shipping charges. I recently discovered an alternative that takes blends the ease of use of the Wilton fondant with the taste of the Satin Ice - I made my own! It's an incredibly easy recipe with only three ingredients - marshmallows, water and confectioner's sugar. You can also add in orange or vanilla extract for added flavor. Making your own fondant is cheap, easy and it tastes very good. Recipe is easily found online (I didn't create it so I don't want to post it here). I recommend skipping the Wilton fondant and making your own!

Wilton Fondant Book Review

Wilton Fondant Book

I really love this book as a beginner. I'm currently taking the fondant and gum paste course by Wilton. This book is a great progression from what you learn in the course. Many of the ideas are doable from the beginner level and of course they throw in some extremely impressive designs that are for someone who is more advanced or looking for a challenge. I'm very glad I took the course because Wilton does some things that don't make a whole lot of sense when your following their instructions. Like they will tell you to use a leave shaped cutter to cut out a peice of gum paste then they will tell you to roll it into a ball (seems silly to use the shape but the shape is the amount of gum pasted you needed via Wilton world). Overall some great ideas and well written.

Wilton 1907-117 Floral Collection 32-Piece Gum Paste Flower-Making Set Review

Wilton 1907-117 Floral Collection 32-Piece Gum Paste Flower-Making Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My partner and I have been exploring cake sculpting and working with gum paste rose to the top as a great, flexible material in which to sculpt things that would dry hard. We picked up the Wilton Flower Making Set and happily poured through the contents, including all the flower cutters, the instruction book and tools. To break things down for this review, we'll explore each component.
The cutters - 5 stars! These cutters are sturdy, yet cut fondant and gum paste very well into the desired shapes. We were then easily able to form various petals into their shapes and mold fabulous roses, just about right off the bat! We've also used the leaf cutters when we recently made a fantastic Green Man cake. We were able to cut the leaves, shape in the texture and veins and paint them easily and quickly (after we practiced a few, of course) thanks to these cutters.
The tools - 1 star, if that. Included in our set was a small wooden dowel for rolling out fondant and gum paste and two wooden tools for shaping. These wooden tools were awful! They were unsanded and rough, so that even after greasing up with solid white shortening, they still dragged and tore the material we were forming. We picked up a cheap set of clay sculpting tools made of plastic that were MUCH more effective and easy to use.
The book - 4 stars. The book is a great start and will get you into beginner style flowers. Some of the pictures though showed flowers that we would never put on a cake. I know we do have perfectionist tendencies but when we sculpt flowers, we want to take people's breath away. The awesomeness of this book DID come, however, with the illustrations that showed what cutters were needed for what flowers. That makes this book invaluable. So, if you want more realistic, detailed flowers, check out various youtube tutorials out there and you'll get a much better idea of each step than the book gives.
The accessories - 5 stars. Also included is a protector board, a couple spongy squares and an interlocking stand thing. The protector board is wonderful for keeping gum paste from drying out too fast as you cut out multiple pieces. Say you're making a rose. Roll out a small bit of gum paste and cut out the number of petals you'll need for any given row you're working on, slip the pieces in the protector and they'll stay softer, longer and be easier to shape. Sure, you can use plastic wrap or a overturned cup to similar effect, however, this protector is simple and handy. The spongy squares allow you to do rippling effects and texture that allow petals to 'cup' as they do in real life, and make it dreamily easy to piece together into the final flower. Now, the stand thing? We've yet to figure out what that does. It's a lousy book holder, not stable enough to hang finished flowers from, so if anyone has found its purpose, please let us know!
All together, this is an excellent kit and well worth the money, even with the lousy tools, which we do plan on sanding to see if they'll smooth out and be usable for SOMETHING, however, when you spend money on a kit to help you make something, my feeling is the components should already be usable, out of the bag. The rest of the kit far outweighs the disappointment in the wooden tools, however, and made us thankful that the little plastic clay tools we picked up work SO well with the fondant and gum paste flowers and leaves we've made already.

The cutter is nice and worked well, but the prints were for the most part useless on rolled fondant. The solid print worked the best, but the two detailed ones didn't transfer well.

Wilton 902-240 48-Page Soft-Cover Cake-Decorating Guide, Course 1 Review

Average Reviews:

Just a note, you get this book free when you sign up to take the Wilton Cake Class Course 1 (at least you do at Michael's Arts & Crafts where I took mine)
The book is easy to understand, pictures are literally step by step and include instruction such as "offhand," meaning it will tell you that something should resemble an ice cream cone or look like a behive, to swirl here, or lightly brush here, sweeping motion, etc. I found it very refreshing not to all be spoken in terms that only people who attended culinary school would understand. It also shows you the pictures of suggested supplies you will need in the beginning of the book so your not running back to the store each time you start a new segment.
I would suggest just taking the class because on top of getting the book free, you do get a lot more tips and advice from the instructor that you can jot down in the ample space imbetween pictures and notes in the book. But if you too busy or there isn't a class scheduled near you, this book would certainly suffice in helping you get started!

Wilton Big Bling Ring Review

Wilton Big Bling Ring
Average Reviews:

I was looking for something like this to use as a paper weight for my desk. I saw the price and assumed that the ring would be made out of thick plastic and the quality didn't look bad. I just received the item a few days ago and was very disappointed. The quality is not good at all. It is made out of cheap plastic and looks like something you could buy from the dollar store. There were even places where the plastic was chipping off. I would not recommend this product unless the price is greatly reduced.

I wanted to use these cutters to make fondant snowflakes for a wedding cake. The snowflake cutters themselves are nice but the impression mats were not nearly deep enough to see. I ended up piping buttercream frosting on top to give them more depth.
