(More customer reviews)i *love* Martha Stewart's cupcake book! for years i've been searching her web site for cupcake ideas for baby showers and my kids' birthday parties. this book is chock full of wonderfully creative cupcakes for all seasons, holidays and special occasions! i've already made the shark and beach parasol cupcakes for my son's ocean-themed birthday party and the beautiful buttercream chrysanthemum cupcakes for a baby shower. you may think you need some special talent to pull her creations off, but all you need is a little practice and patience! there is no way you can leaf through this book without getting inspired...and drooling! After 287 pages of pics of and recipes for mouth-watering cupcakes, she includes informative pages on tools for baking, how to prepare a piping bag, working with fondant and marzipan, pastry tips and even how to display your treats. my husband agrees that this was a wonderful investment since he's seen how many of her baking ideas have come to fruition in our home...plus he's hoping i make him those yummy tiramisu or choc. salted-caramel mini cupcakes for his birthday! ;) yummo! Cakes from Scratch in Half the Time: Recipes That Will Change the Way You Bake Cakes Forever Review

(More customer reviews)I love to bake cookies, pies, tarts, cheesecakes etc. but have always had lousy luck with cakes. I have tried a few from the famous Cake Bible (Rose Levy Beranbaum) and from Gourmet and Bon Appetit, but while I know my way around a kitchen, I had concluded that cakes must not be my forte.
I read through Cakes From Scratch in Half the Time yesterday and baked my first cake last night (chocolate orange passion cake!). I was very impressed . Great texture and flavor. The whole thing was very easy - her methods are simple. She teaches you to assemble all the ingredients, bring the eggs to room temp by placing in hot tap water, soften the butter by placing on top of the preheating stove (or microwaving for a few seconds), and spray the pans with Baker's Joy (which Cook's Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen just confirmed works better than hand greasing and flouring of pans).
This is definitely not fussy cake-making. Most cakes are made in a single mixing bowl, so not a lot to wash. The keys are:
1. Good ingredients (cake flour, whole milk, unsalted butter, good whipping cream, bittersweet chocolate, etc.)
2. Good equipment (inexpensive aluminum light-colored cake pans)
3. Right process (add the ingredients in a particular order, don't overmix, and bake at 400).
I couldn't make the frosting because both Safeway and Whole Foods were completely out of powdered sugar. GO figure. But the cake was wonderful. I made an easy chocolate ganache from another cake in the book to frost it with. I am going to try it later this week for a birthday party with the intended frosting.
One minor nitpick so far - I think she oversimplifies the directions for melting chocolate. She says to put in the microwave on full power for 1 minute, but in my experience (in my microwave) that makes the chocolate sieze up. I have to do 50% power for a minute, then stirring after 30 second intervals until it melts. Trust your own experience there.
I am eager to try more of her cakes, but am hopeful I can get away from cake mixes forever now!

(More customer reviews)The stand is sturdy and attractive. The listing states that it hold 10-12 inch pie plates, which it does. I just want to clarify for future buyers that it won't hold much else. The welds connecting the rings to the stand are higher than the ring, so any time of dish that would rest on the ring itself will rock back and forth. So, as long as you only want to use 10-12 inch pie plates, this is a great stand. Otherwise, I would recommend purchasing elsewhere. They also have a very strict return policy, which I did not see at first; the link is at the bottom of the listing page.

Wilton 307-859 3-Tier Cakes N More Party Stand Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this 3 tier cake stand to present a wedding cake that had separate small, medium, and large layers to be set on the 3 platforms. The stand was affordable and looked presentable in the picture, and hence I picked it. It came with clear assembly instructions, was easy to assemble, and was very sturdy once assembled (although see below). Note that the 3 plates on the stand are clear molded plastic, not glass or thick plexiglass. Also, it's a bit hard to see from the product photo so I'll note that the 3 plates don't overlap each other above and below - they're fully offset so you can put things on them that are taller than the height between them. Overall the stand did turn out to be clean looking and presentable. For the formality of the wedding reception we draped it with white linen napkins, but I would definitely use it undraped at home for desserts or appetizers at a less formal party. My only complaint is that one of legs was missing the notch needed to stop it from slipping through the slot in the base (the bottom large silver circle you see in the product photo) that holds all 3 stands together to form a stable platform. I didn't have time to deal with it before our event so we jury-rigged it with tape and it worked great; I've since called Wilton's customer service, which was friendly and helpful, and they're sending a replacement leg now, no questions asked. So if you're looking for a nice-looking, sturdy, inexpensive way to present desserts or other things I definitely recommend this product.

It does work, it's certainly sturdy enough, but you need to get apples that are a bit on the small side, unfortunately. works GREAT for satsumas, and will probably work nicely for plums in the summer. I would have liked this to be a little larger, but it does work.

Wow, wow, and WOW! This veritable encyclopedia of "mini-cake" decorating is so fun and easy that there is absolutely no excuse for anyone to lament "they can't". With the use of food items found anywhere, you will be making the cutest, and most impressive cupcake creations you can possibly think of, and Karen and Alan will make you legendary to boot!
This team of talent has come up with extremely amazing and irresistable cupcakes like giraffes, Van Gogh paintings, clowns, aquariums, etc that will all fit on top of a little poof of cake batter.
The book size itself is large with big print which lends itself to the purpose of the photographic detail that is so big, sharp, and clear, there is no doubt or question on sequence or step. Karen Tack is the recipe creator and food stylist and Alan Richardson is the text writer and photographer; both are brilliant and incredibly talented individuals, so as a team, they are a match made in cupcake heaven.
The Acknowledgement page was itself fun and relaxed, not something plodded through; you can tell it was done with real gratitude and thought, which is part of the overall charm of how this book was put together.
There are 8 chapters between the "Introduction" and the "Sources"; got those socks gripped?........
INTRODUCTION: Your text page begins the journey, and right after, you are given an impressive section of pages that visually, and with text, show you how you will make the many creations through the use of candies, cookies, and types of sugars.
CUPCAKING TECHNIQUES: This was invaluable for those who are novice cupcake bakers or wannabe's. Hints and instructions on methods for pouring batter, spreading frosting, making frosting, and melting chocolate for designs, are shown in close detail. They show you how to make "fur" for the lion cupcakes and "leaves" for flowers. This is followed by methods used to draw "bugs", people faces, and hairstyles by using melted chocolate and candies. The next section shows how you will literally build up these creations, like the bowling pin cupcakes, so instruction is shown in simple and fascinating detail. Part of the more complex designs require a grouping of cupcakes, like "corn on the cob", "rabbits in a hole", or the "alligator", and you are given an idea of the schematics involved in getting them just right!

Wilton 902-795 128-Page Soft-Cover Cake-Decorating Book, Cupcake Fun Review

(More customer reviews)I was a little disappointed in this book when I first got it. Since all you see on the cover is some "clown" cupcakes using the silly-feet baking cups (which I also purchased) I was expecting more uses of the silly-feet (I counted five), but it really covers whimsical cupcakes of all sorts, many of which would be suitable to make with children (easy to make).
It's really just an idea book and a catalog of Wilton products and what you can do with them. There is a helpful section called "The Perfect Cupcakes; How to bake, ice and decorate", and there are about six pages of recipes. Most cupcake instructions are from 1/8 to 1/2 page long, right next to a big, clear picture.
After getting over the "it wasn't what I expected" part of receiving this book, and seeing that my boyfriend seems rather enthusiastic about making really whimsical cupcakes and loves the silly-feet, I like this book more and more. Just don't expect anything sophisticated looking in it OR that many silly-feet ideas. If you are familiar with the typical adverbook that Wilton puts out, you shouldn't find any surprises here, and some of the recipes, which are a blend of from-a-mix and from-scratch, for the most part look very tempting.
There are six pages of really cute Halloween cupcakes, including a vampire in a coffin, and some skeletons/ghosts/tombstones.

Wilton Floating Tiers Cake Stand Review

(More customer reviews)I used Wilton's Floating Tiers Cake Stand for my brother's wedding this weekend. I LOVE the simple, discreet design, and the fool proof ease of use. The cake looked amazing. HOWEVER!!!
By the time the bride and groom were to cut the cake, we were horrified to see that all cake layers were tilting forward at an angle and about to slide right off the display plates. The stand was assembled properly and placed on a stable level table top indoors on a level concrete floor. There was no user error regarding sound location or use. I had no reason to worry that a METAL WILTON CAKE STAND would be inadequate. The only possible explanation I can offer is that this cake was triple filled (4 layers of cake and three layers of filling, for each 4" high cake), as might be expected for a wedding cake. It is clear that this stand would only be adequate for unfilled cakes with very little frosting or decoration. In 18 years I have never had that simple of a request for a wedding cake.
PLEASE MAKE IT CLEAR THAT THERE SHOULD BE A WEIGHT LIMIT FOR EACH SIZE OF CAKE DISPLAYED ON THIS STAND, both in your package instructions and on the web sight before customer purchase. I will be returning my cake stand to the store I purchased it from, as it did not function as advertised and is totally inadequate for the ongoing use I would expect for the purchase price.

(More customer reviews)this is not the pretty elegant picture the picture leads you to believe - it is not the china looking porcelain with the beautiful silver/platnium looking trim but rather a piece of white everyday porcelain quality with a very thing silver paint line - it is workable and it is a good price bu the picture is quite misleading - if you are looking for something for a more formal table such as a high tea this piece, I am afraid, will disappoint you.
